Ten Ways to Get Involved in Missions
by Greg Purnell
- First of all, PRAY throughout the
process! Ask God to give those around you vision and passion for missions. As you continue to pray,
gain an in-depth perspective of missions by reading and studying. Let God speak to you about how
and where he wants you to serve. You can find the Top 25 Recommended Books on Missions in the Mission Mobilizer's Database.
- Contact ACMC (Advancing Churches in Missions
Commitment), an organization that helps people mobilize their churches for missions involvement.
There's no need to "reinvent the wheel;" ACMC has considered and researched how to mobilize
churches for missions and can share many resources and ideas with you. <>li>
- Encourage a core group to take the course "Perspectives on the World Christian Movement." Offered in many cities worldwide each semester, this outstanding class, which meets one night a week for 15 weeks, is fun, interesting, and has a life-changing impact. Contact the Perspectives Study Program to learn about a class in your area. This course is also available online.
- Plan a short-term mission trip for your group. Check out the resource Outreach Opportunities database for a short-term mission project for your group.
- Initiate friendships with internationals living in your area. This is a great way to learn, serve, and build world vision. ISI (International Students, Inc.) can provide great ideas and resources regarding how to befriend internationals.
- Begin world-focused prayer times and pray for unreached people groups in your ongoing meetings. Use William Carey Library http://www.uscwm.org(operated by the US Center for World Missions ).
Provide fun, interesting missions education for children. A list of organizations with excellent children's mobilization material is available in the Mission Mobilizer's Database. Request information from KidsCan Network at (800) 543-7554, Esther Network at (407) 832-8043, or M&M Kids at (800) 60-SERVE.
- Encourage all the youth you know (ages 13-25) to attend an "Acquire the Fire" weekend! It's a weekend of worship, skits, Bible teaching, videos, thousands of youth, and a call to radical commitment to follow Christ in one's teenage years, as well as a great challenge to go on a summer missions trip. Visit the Prayerwalking (Creation House) and Taking Our Cities For God (Creation House).
- Incorporate the Vision for the Nations video series into your church or campus activities: Contact US Center for World Mission for information. Also, subscribe to Brigada MissionMobilizers . This email list is designed to send you about two messages per week to encourage, equip, and network you in mission mobilization ministry.
- Move your fellowship toward adopting an unreached people group. Contact Ordinary People/Extraordinary Love .
May God guide you in these and all the steps you take to mobilize your church, campus, and friends to help take the good news of Jesus Christ to "all nations."
